Lake Michigan Ride—Day 9

Mackinaw City—St. Ignace, MI: 10 miles

Monday, June 11, 2018

Today we rode ten miles.

Really, today was get to Mackinac Island on ferry,
Have whatever bike ride around island area you wanted to do,
Take ferry to St Ignace.

Smooth sailings,
Sunny skies,
Paved trail,
Gorgeous scenery

Arriving Mackinac Island at 10am,
Docking area filled with ferry passengers,
Figuring out their next move.

Main street swirling with walkers, bicyclists,
Horse drawn carriages,
Freight bicycles carrying suitcases to lodgings.
No motorized vehicles on island.
MI trail council guy said yesterday,
"That street smells like horse poop and fudge!”

Many, many folks on rented bicycles,
Some not having ridden for years,
Means watching for uncertain, wobbly, wide-eyed riders.

Some miles out of town,
Crowd thinned, views expanded,
Riding leisurely.

Margaret likes to stop to read all
Historical signs.
Lovely breaks and extensive information.

I opted to not ride any hills today,
And headed onto main street for lunch.
MY choice.

Still the old unease,
Even at this age, with all these bike trips,
"Will I get service if completely alone?"

Completely unfounded.
I got excellent service, excellent food,
With waitress wondering "Are you doing fine, darlin'?"

Lucky, lucky me....

I AM doing fine!

Ferry ride back with cyclists Susan and Judy,
Fun to be with, expanding my life,
New friendships.

Sending HUGS to each,
Lin

Yes, on my visit to the island quite a few years ago I remember thinking that “no cars” would be ideal until I realized that horse poop was everywhere. As the little fox said, “nothing is perfect.”
Breezy, cloudy day in Ennis, County Clare. Walked the town since arriving. Found wonderful veg/vegan cafe for soup & bread lunch name is “Peckish.” The waitress who greeted me was so welcoming! A couple of guys making music on the street. Wish I could remember words!
Glad today was so enjoyable. Naurine

I’m laughing at your description of the downside of no cars! Happily, bicycles don’t poop! 🙂
I can tell you are having a marvelous adventure! I look forward to hearing more about it. Enjoy!

I’m glad you’re having such a good time, Lin! Sounds like the planners know how to sprinkle in easier riding days at just the right times. Whew. And go ahead and eat that fudge!!!

You probably saw that picture of the strawberry rhubarb pie I enjoyed last night! I, too, amd grateful for the shorter mile days. The chance to catch my breath was welcome.
