Season Shifts

As Summer Rolls Into Fall

Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020

Hello My Friend,

What do you ponder as summer rolls into autumn?

As I rode this morning,
Cornfields still standing tall,
Mature, drying corn attached to stalks,
It is clear that summer crops are ripe.
Soon to be harvested.

Cornfields—such a
Marker through growing season.
Poking up, then
"Knee-high-by-Fourth-of-July", then
Suddenly tall.

Tall corn cuts off sight lines
Where county roads intersect.
Changes the horizon.

For cyclist on long ride,
Through long stretches of farmland,
Cornfields provide "pee-stop" privacy
When rider walks several feet between rows.

Don't walk in too far!
You can actually get lost in a cornfield!

Long rows, all the same,
Corn so tall it cuts any view,
Disorienting with sameness.

Still, handy for pit stop,
When no alternative present.

Yellow blooms predominate now.
Masses of goldenrod,
Vision of lovely yellow
That makes you sneeze if you have autumn hay fever.

I ponder the growth I've seen,
The weather that makes biking easy,
Long light that provides options,
My joy in pedaling countryside.

I ponder how wishing for an extension,
Doesn't affect the season shift that's coming.

I ponder that repeated reminder,
"You have today"
"Be grateful.”

I ride and notice.
Lucky me.

Big hugs,
Lin

See that "V" of migrating geese between my head and the wind turbine? Sign of seasonal change...

Wonderful park by Power Station, perfect for resting on a ride.
