Nurturing Expansion

Exploring the "known" with Beginner Eyes

Wednesday, October 7, 2020

My dear friend,

What have you "explored" recently?

Even though we've had MN as home for fifty years,
Seldom have Bob and I explored MN.
Summer vacations were headlong drive West.

Grandparents and free lodging
West in WY & CO.

Hours of straight-through driving
Got us there.
No exploring on those trips!

Our life, much different now.
Children grown,
Grandparents no longer living,
Cabin altitude too high,
Oxygen too thin for Bob's comfort breathing.

A different stage,
Different possibilities!

Spent a day driving some MN back roads.
Theoretically looking for fall color.
Even though we knew,
Too early for that particular area.

My goodness!
Farms, valleys, ridges, rivers,
New to our view,
Adding depth of "place.”

Bringing my "beginner eyes"
To notice depth,
Notice variety in what I thought I knew,
Notice possibility in what is at hand,
Expands my life.

Noticing solid, kind, committed qualities,
In connections;
Plus riding my bike,
Keeps my life "rich."

Hugs to you,
Wishes for your "beginner eyes.”

Today's limerick came about when our youngest son gave us the gift of converting never-before-viewed old home movies to digital format, posting so we could watch. Wow! What an emotional ride ...

The north woods off Highway 2 between Cass Lake and Deerwood was full of color last week. The quaking aspen and sugar maple around Lake Winnibegosh made the woods sing as one looked through the dense foliage off the main road.
Red maple and oak lent their pop. Here and there were old growth pine that gave the woods a sense of depth and antiquity. The canopy on the smaller roads made one think “What a beautiful place for a wedding.” All the way down Highway 6 and even 169 the show carried on. And this was mostly under overcast skies with just a hint of sunshine. The far vistas are beautiful this time of year but for an awe inspiring experience walk or bicycle in the woods of Minnesota in the fall.

Thanks, Lin for your adventure in the Fall.
