Measuring Progress

Yup! Knee-high by the fourth of July.

Noticing at this time, just what I
Am viewing as personal "knee-high.”
Not logging the miles,
I notice my smiles.
Delight and beauty ... my "smile-supply.”

How do you measure progress?

Do you know the expression
"Knee high by the 4th of July"?
It's about how much corn will have
Grown from planting time to July 4th.

Where I live in Minnesota,
Knee high or more is
The hoped for July 4th corn height.
What a handy way to mark
That crop's progress.
To notice if a usual pattern is matched.

Left: This corn was planted early. Right: Oops. Those are soybeans. Always short.

Makes me stop and think.
Are there ways
I notice my progress?

Then .... Right now
Do I even want to notice
"Progress?”

Other years there have been
Total miles in a certain number of days.
Number of bike trips in a year.

Now though, I'm thinking of
Delightful bike rides I take.
Heart-to-heart conversations with friends.
Lovely flowers I see in a flower box.
Messages from loved ones.

Do those go "knee high" by the 4th of July?

Way, way beyond
In my current noticing mode.

My dear friend's birthday event. Definitely heart connecting.

At some point,
I may get back to mile count.

For now, I'm relishing what shows up.

Some things teach me a lesson.
(I'm not fond of those).
Still ... no mileage logs at this time.

If it's relevant for you,
Notice the corn.

And set your own
"Notice-with-Delight log sheet."

Hugs,
Lin

Clockwise from upper left: Wonderful window box planting. Hanging baskets on street lamp. Flowers planted in a water trough.

  1. Dear Lin,

Just yesterday, in Winona, MN, I saw this quote by Albert Einstein in a friend's house. I think you, too, might like it:

“Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.”

    Here, here!

Glad for you continuing delight in life's journey!

    Love, Leslie
