Tour de Wyoming: Day 4

Meeteetse to Basin, WY: 54 miles

Wednesday, July 20, 2016

Out early.
Such an early start from our motel,
E. and I were first of 350 in line for brkfst.

There was full moon,
Horizon of pink clouds,
Quiet roads.

Minutes later,
Straight angle morning sun in eyes.
Not for long.

Ride was fast, easy,
Part of adventure, not mission.

Into Basin by 10:30
Before heat of day.
A relief.

Rest stop location in Otto, WY;
Childhood home of my mother, Mary Thorley.
Otto mostly withered, dried, collapsed.
However Grampa Thorley's house is
Still housing some family,
On corner.

Basin is childhood home of my dad, Murray McLaughlin.
Found my grandparents house.
Flood of memories from visits as kid.

House seemed smaller,
Trees fewer and scraggy.
Still, where I visited my Grama and GranDad.

Back porch,
Entry and exit for all,
Looked welcoming.
I was glad.

Went to Otto cemetery.
With E.'s help interpreting "directory"
Found Mama's mother, Mary P. Thorley.

Never have done that sort of searching
And I am glad we did.

Basin has grocery store,
Source of 'picnic in park' food.
Small / only motel houses us in AC comfort.

Stop in library calming,
Pleasant and informing (for those who wanted)

Found fine little ice cream store,
"Cone Zone" where we all had cold, delicious shakes.

Now in Basin, temp is 102 degrees.
SO VERY Glad ride was early and easy!

All well.

Hugs to each,
Lin

Today's Limerick:
In looking for houses from past years,
I found myself flooded with some tears.
Those folks who were kind,
A-gain in my mind.
Fun-filled mem--or-y now reappears.

What a wonderful day you have had,
Complete with ice cream and memories of Dad
Memories of childhood times,
Bring you to today with all good signs.

So pleased you are able to vacation
And not just pump and pump to vexation,
You are having a great time,
Thanks to your good timey SAG!!

I shake my head in disbelief at what you are accomplishing. The human body is an amazing thing and it must be mind over matter every single day. I smile at the touches of humor in you journey and cringe when I think of the obstacles.I am so glad that you have had a chance to touch the past and your family and Bruce’s. One can learn a lot from an old cemetery and old houses can bring a flood of memory and emotion. Hopefully all will be well as you continue.
