Potential for Joy

Wednesday, January 24, 2024

I have the “anticipating-travel-angst.”

You know that point when you think
“Really, this takes too much figuring out & doing.
 Better to stay home…” ?

This trip will be inside the U.S.

  1. I’m familiar with the money.
  2. I can drink the water.
  3. Most people speak English.

What could be simpler?

This will be our month away
To avoid winter’s ice-on-pathways:
February on South Padre Island, Texas.

Even with my three points of travel-ease,
My mind fills with concerns.
I’ve never been there before!

Gathering clothing sufficient for layering
For unknown TX temperature span—
Seems overwhelming.

Ahh…
Sort of like layers for biking!

Morning of any ride,
I start out with best-guess layers.

Down the road a bit,
Layer off…. short time later
Layer on.
That can be “the drill” all day.
It works.
Layer on … Layer off.

Changing, standing on the edge of a road,
Being willing to note that moment’s need,
Add on or peel away,
Often “little-bitty” bits
Can give me the most comfortable,
Efficient, fun experience.

And, as we can all see,
It’s not just about Biking.
It’s about Life.

Taking time to metaphorically,
Stand beside my current road,
Layer on, layer off.
Intentions, assumptions, activities,
And yes—maybe jackets and rain pants.
That’s what moves me on my life-road.

I know how to do that!
Though not always easy,
It can give my life satisfying days.

Hmmm,  that puts things into
Perspective for me.

This trip will be learning, doing, being—
All potential for joy.

Hugs,
Lin

When you’re in your life as the Player,
Participant bold, not naysayer;
Do look out for you,
Do what you need to,
By on-ing or off-ing some layer.

Oh this was so good! I love the connection between layering on and off and packing for a trip, as we pack for life’s adventures. We do become what we have on to some degree, but at the same time, keeping perspective, and accepting what we can without OVER preparing (or overpacking for that matter). As a professional in that area, I find it fun to do the packing part. It’s the laying it all out a week before, then eliminating and adding as the days count down to departure. I did that all last week, only to have the trip cancelled at the last minute, but then there’s that sweet quietness of the “nothing” day. It’s all good, especially if we live in the light of God being in control. I often have to go back to that verse and remind myself: God will supply ALL my needs according to His riches…

Thank you for being an inspiration once again, especially as I re-pack for this trip!

Love your reminder for breathing into the quiet sweetness of a “nothing day.” Great image! Finding peace in while not knowing–something I am continually seeking.

Brilliant!

Have a great trip, Lin and Bob! I hope you have sunshine.
Please leave room in your suitcase to fit sunshine to spread
in for Northfield.

Lin –
Yes, layering on biking days. So familiar.
I’m now preparing for a 2-week safari in Tanzania and struggling to decide what clothing to bring. I have the tour company’s recommendations but still ponder – which fleece jacket? how many t-shirts? long sleeve or short, shorts or capri length? sneakers – yes but which second pair of foot wear?
But I’m not complaining – it part of the wonderful pre-trip planning and anticipation.
I hope you and Bob have a warm, safe, relaxing, time in Texas.

Thank you , Hope! I wish you a fabulous adventure as well. My daughter reminded me “you can always buy something if you really need it!” Ah, yes. True.
