What’s the “nugget” of what you need?

I’m daily reminding myself:
Small bits, short distances.
That is the way I am operating now.

Feels right some of the time.
At other times, it seems glacial.

When I bother to notice,
I realize that the small bits
Can provide me with the
Nugget, or Crux of an experience.

Touring the small bank
“Jewel Box Creation”
Designed by Louis Sullivan
Rather than touring a big museum.

Or bicycling THREE whole miles,
Outside on a perfectly gorgeous day
That called for riding three hours
To celebrate “first of season” ride.

Maybe like having a few sumptuous bites of
Some “killer” chocolate cake,
When you’d like to eat the whole thing.

Realistic limits are the way to go.

That’s working for me now,
And I am appreciating that I can make
A choice for a gradual return to activity.

When I get really restless
And antsy about the “small bits,”
Then it will be time to ramp up.

Patience to each of us.

Hugs,
Lin

Limerick:

Slowly at levels I thought I’d hate,
Active, with goal to regenerate.
I think you’ll agree
I surely can be
Living quite fully at any rate.

  1. What a good reminder to be blessed where we rest, whether it is 3 miles or 30 miles, the small steps count! Thank you Lin 😉

  2. This message is useful, Lin, on the one-year anniversary of total knee arthroplasty surgery. I expected to be done with swelling and stiffness, and apparently that’s normal. Not what I want. Get on the bike anyway, and ride a mile. Then two. Then three. But I’m impatient. Sometimes that’s useful for getting going. Thanks for the encouragement you offer with such honesty.

  3. It is always inspiring to receive your posts! We all need each other! It certainly does “take a village”!

It is time for me to get back on my three-wheeler–inspiring by YOU, Lin!

    Friends since grade school–Fincher School.

  4. You are an inspiration to get my bike out, dust it off and take just a small ride. Getting it out of the is the most difficult things to d0. Not physically, but mentally. Thanks for the encouragement.

    1. Yes, those mental hurdles can be tougher than the inevitable aches and pains of getting back in the groove! Cheering you on…

  5. Lovely note, as always, Lin, thank you. It’s a good lesson for me…!

I hope you continue to feel stringer and stronger as we move through spring into summer.

    Love,
    Jill

    1. Thank you, Jill! Right now I’m in the Pacific Northwest, where I’ve been able to ride over 6 miles per day! Bit by bit. So grateful to be gaining strength.

  6. Great column. It is so important to appreciate and be grateful for what we have.
Savor the three miles. Thanks for writing as I love your words.
