Lost and Found

Lost? Look for mail carrier for directions.

You find that your left-turn selection,
Results in mistaken direction.
Now who can you find,
Who really won't mind,
Explaining some other connection?

What do you do when you’re lost?

A stretch of bike-friendly temperatures,
A schedule that allows in-the-moment ride lengths,
Has me riding my bicycle and smiling a lot.
Biking makes me happy.

I need to edit out those times when
I am soaked with rain,
Cold from poor clothing choice,
Really tired,
Lost.

Lost ... that is my worst case.
I've told you that my map reading skills
Are diminishing.
That I try to ride with someone when
Map reading is required.

When I'm lost, I REALLY use
My "Ask For Help" directive for myself.
Most are willing to help.

My home town: flowers on Bridge Square.

I've learned that someone driving a car
Tends to underestimate a distance.
Understandable since you zip along in a car.
Mileage can seem fairly short.

On a bike, the difference between
"Just 2 miles" and the reality of 5 miles,
Is significant.
I factor that in as I hear the driver's directions.

Left: Real find on any ride: well-maintained outhouse. Right: Trying to match route sheet with street signs.

I've learned that a gas station's staff people
Are often from someplace else.
They don't know local road names.

Rural mail-truck drivers
Are a very good source.
Knowing small roads which
Sometimes having two different names
Are what lets the mail get to a rural mailbox.

That  mail-truck driver may even know of
Some short-cut connection.

Like many things in life,
Once you've found the destination,
Gotten dried out, fed, had a nap,
Things are better.
Maybe even happy.

May the right directions show up when you need them.

Hugs,
Lin
