Up Mountain 9 miles

High Altitude Training Continues

July 12, 2016

Hi Friends,

Continuing to pedal up mountain;
Not yet to top of Snowy Range.

Up same mountain route with 1/2 wind,
e.g. gusts of 25 not 50 mph.
Less wind, more aware what conditions required, meant more miles.
Slowest one hour of whole trip, and
It worked.

Relearned that when stop midst uphill,
Move to higher gear before stop.
Starting in lowest gear, nearly impossible for me.
Without some resistance, can't even get both feet on pedals.

Thinking about my very first talk,
"Extraordinary Adventures of an Ordinary Person."
Remains good title.

I am having unusual adventure,
Still Ordinary Person who happened onto
Satisfying activity.

Privilege of being able to take on
Bike trips as my commitment.
Opportunity to spend many days on bike,
Getting down some road "one pedal stroke at a time."

I get too tired, too hot, too grumpy.
I think "why am I out here?"
"If I'm on vacation, why is it such hard work?"

These last couple days in college town surrounds,
Where there are young, fit people,
Confident and fast in outdoor activities they do;
Easy for me to compare and feel
Lesser than.

Today on uphill, then downhill miles,
Passed three times by same guy
Training on his bike, probably for "Tour de WY."

Took me some minutes to come back to knowing
My rhythm, my skills, my possibilities,
Are just right for me in my adventure.

All is well.

Hugs to all,
Lin

  1. I can just imagine how difficult this ride must be. Everyone is amazed that you have done this much! Everyone is cheering for you–even one pedal stroke at a time! Yes, what a vacation you are having! Loved the Indian Paint Brush!!
We have had such a great response to your talk that we have reserved a LARGER room–the Powder River Room, in the Plains!!! Maybe knowing that will help you up that mountain, sweet one!
    Love you,
    Bev

  2. Thank you for the note about Father Mike Tegeder. He was an amazing person, biked from western Minneapolis to his two parishes and Parks & Trails Council meetings.
Your endeavors are a real inspiration.
A few of my Pedalers are playing with new names for us. My unfavorite is “College City Cranks”.

    1. The sense of community sharing something like this creates is marvelous. It’s that “power of connection” I talk about, part of what helps me get through the hard stuff—both in biking and in the rest of life.
I agree, “College City Cranks” is an unfavorite!

  3. Hi Lin,
What an impressive trip, both this time and ten years ago. Your amazing. And, yes, one peddle stroke at a time is how I get through even basic exercises sometimes. Glad you found such a challenging and satisfying connection with/through biking.

I won’t be at the reunion, unfortunately, but am cheering you on from my home in the state of Washington. Best to you. Jeannie

    1. We’ll both keep it up, one peddle stroke at a time! You will be missed at the reunion—-be well! My daughter lives in Washington State. Beautiful place!
