Unplanned Detours

Wednesday, April 30, 2025

When change comes and much is affected,
Some change you would not have selected,
You move with that flow.
Learn what you don't know,
Releasing the pathway expected,

How do you handle your unplanned detours?

How often I've heard,
"Life can change in a flash."

Bob had a stroke this week.
Right hand is weak and uncoordinated,
Right arm... a bit weak.
Low stamina.

On scale of what could have been,
Damage is mild.
Medical professionals say
Very likely to regain use of hand
With occupational therapy,
Persistent exercise and time.

How wonderful is that?
It's a great prognosis.

My life has changed, too.
More attention to activities
Where my two-hand skills are needed.
Driving for all errands.

It's learning new choreography
For myself and both of us.

How to use new "dance steps"
For routines that weren't usual until now.

New life choreography left to right. Top: cutting meat for Bob, writing down calendar appointments, Bottom: Bob handling left-handed serving, Lucky to have each other.

How to remember that patience
Smooths any interaction.

How to seize time for a bike ride...
My mental health go-to.

We are both learning.

I'd say that Gratitude
Is front and center
Throughout any day.

Being where we were,
Speedy access to help.
Medical professionals available.
Emergency Room nearly empty.
Immediate testing and attention
For Bob.

As I often ask you  ...
Cherish the moments, whatever they bring.

Hugs,
Lin

Out for a ride: on trail, poised in garage, beautiful trailside flowers.

Dear Lin,

This post is one that truly resonates with me. I respond to its wisdom–and admire the limerick on several levels.

I, too, am very grateful for Bob’s diagnosis of “mild” and glad that you have each other and your equilibrium. True wealth!

Love, Leslie

Slowing down
Appreciating little things
Like waiting for a zinnia seed I planted in a pot to sprout!!

I love that analogy. Perfect! May the zinnia bring fresh brilliance and beauty in its right time!

Lin… and Bob,

Each of you is important to each of us. Randy and I will pray for your well-being. We will pray for your mental confidence, physical strength, and spiritual sustenance.

I am thankful that you previously functioned as a team, because as you noted, Lin, recovery is enhanced by teamwork. (I recall this from thirty years ago when Randy recovered from a mild stroke. I also recall that occasional breaks from the teamwork can contribute to the well-being of each member of the team.)

Thinking of you both, in friendship and with faith,
Muriel…. and Randy

Lin and Bob,
This resonates for me, as my mother had a stroke a generation ago. Your posting sounds as you’re both taking appropriate steps to help in Bob’s recovery.

I’ll say prayers for you.

Hello Bob and Lin! Thankful the stroke was relatively mild. PT can do wonders.
