60th Reunion Ride: Day 11

Gordon to Alliance, NE: 52 miles

July 4, 2016

Much better day today.
Rather than introspection and pessimism;
Some nice memories.

As I was riding, thinking about this being July 4th,
I remembered Fourth of July in Jakarta, Indonesia.
During year there,I got to sing w/ American Women Singers.

Program for Independence Day ,
Wonderful singable patriotic songs about our country.
I, who appreciate my USA privileges, and am nonchalant,
Felt bursting pride singing ,
Along w/ twenty other American women.

One song had all state names,
Alphabetical, sung to tune.
At time I thought,
This will be easy to remember all fifty states.

Today, making my way up Nebraska hills,
Blank recall on that,
Just remembering patriotic event.

Because forecast said high temps today,
Started riding at five thirty a.m.
Bob joined me for part of morning ride into Hay Springs.

By that time, very hungry.
Ate lunch at 9:30 a.m.

We are eating well,
Protein, good carbs, & variety.
Today was tuna fish packet for each,
Gluten free bread, lettuce, mustard, carrots, half apple.

Already hot by ten a.m.
Headed south toward Alliance, NE.
Pulled myself off at 52 miles and ninety degrees.
Just TOO hot to continue.

I now remember that this 45 mile stretch between Hay Springs and Alliance,
Usually hot with wind of some direction.
Sun light is the "fry your skull" variety.
Next ride we will adjust portion of route.

We've established good rhythm for mornings.
New skill learned by we two:
Substantial tilt of heads,
Each different direction,
Lets us share morning good-bye kiss
Without my whacking Bob with helmet mirror ,
And Bob knocking off glasses with Beko.

Who would have thought!

Hugs to each of you,
Lin

Sending you love with each pedal stroke. Thanks for the daily logs and for the inspiration. Having a single focus for each day is appealing.

Hugs,
Barb

I expect to arrive in Laramie around the 13th of this month. The reunion isn’t actually until August 5th. I arrive early so I can join my niece Elizabeth Williams in riding the Wyoming State Ride. So lots of news still coming… Love you, too, and thanks for reading!

Fry your skull heat! I remember how scorching hot Nebraska can be!
Glad you are calling it a day with 90 degree heat.
Sun stroke could be a very real issue with those temps.
Take care dear friend!!
Bev

Gaining altitude also seems to increase the sun’s intensity—starting early each day works well.
